Sofia (Spanidis) Longtime resident of Roslindale, formerly of Ano Agios Ioannis, Greece, passed away on September 5, 2026. Beloved wife of the late Sofocles Gavrilidis. Devoted mother of Georgia Teloniatis and her husband Arthur of Kaloni, Lesvos, Greece; Nikolaos Gavrielidis and his wife Despina of Norwood; Eleftherios Gavrielidis of Abington; and the late Georgios Gavrielidis and his surviving wife Peristera of Falmouth; and Efrosyne Gavrielidis. Loving Yiayia of Sophia Devaney, Sofocles Gavrielidis, Moriya Demotte, Christopher Gavrielidis, Sofocles Gavrielidis, and Dimitrios Gavrielidis, Loving Great Yiayia of Isabella, Jaxson, Ryleigh, Elizabeth, Eleftherios, Georgios, Nikolaos, Georgios, and Charlie. Sister of Christos Konstantinidis, Elisabet Kalaitzidis, and the late Marina Gianasmidis, Georgios Konstanitinidis, and Eirini Konstantinidis. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Our beloved Mama and Yiayia was born in Kuban, Russia to the late Nikolaos and Olga Spanidis and later emigrated to Ano Agios Ioannis, Greece where she married the late Sofocles Gavrielidis before making Roslindale, Massachusetts her home. Widowed at the age of 35, she courageously raised four children through difficult times in Greece, eventually moving with them along with her mother-in-law, the late Efrosyne Gavrielidis, to America for a better life. She loved to dance, enjoy good food, and care for everyone around her while always putting her family first. She was blessed to assist in raising her grandchildren and welcomed many great-grandchildren. A devout parishioner of St. Nectarios Church in Roslindale, she dedicated her time and heart to our Philoptochos chapter and to our entire church community. Her loving presence will be deeply missed, and her memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved her.

Visiting hours will be held at the P.E. Murray - F.J. Higgins, George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home 2000 Centre St., West Roxbury on Friday, September 11th from 5-8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church 39 Belgrade Ave., Roslindale on Saturday, September 12th at 10:30 a.m. Burial at Gardens Cemetery, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Sofia’s memory to St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 39 Belgrade Ave., Roslindale, MA 02131.
