It’s been over a year since construction began on Billings Field in West Roxbury. Now, the finish line is in sight. The mounds of construction dirt have been flattened, the lights along the accessible ramp turn on at dusk, and newly installed sprinklers water the growing grass.

Last month, City Councilor Ben Weber gave an update about the renovations via social media. “Had a great walk through of Billings Field with representatives from the City and Parks Department,” he stated. “Tons of progress has been made and we are on track for a partial opening in November. The interior fields will need time for the grass to take root and will be ready in the spring of 2027. Fencing will be put in place to protect the fields as they cure. We’re excited for this improved part of West Roxbury to be open for the community soon!” The basketball, tennis, pickleball, and street hockey courts, playground, walking trail, and benches will all be open this November. There is no exact opening date yet.

“The athletic fields will remain temporarily fenced off to allow the newly installed sod time to establish a strong root system. We ask the public to stay off the grass during this period so it can fully mature. With everyone’s cooperation, the fields will be beautiful, healthy, and durable for a very long time,” stated a spokesperson for Boston Parks and Recreation (BPR).

BPR explained that since resuming construction in the spring, the project has reached several major milestones. Two phases of tree planting have taken place. The backstops for the playing fields are in place and the main scoreboards have been mounted. Sod has been placed on the athletic fields, and the rooting process is now underway. The irrigation system is operational and is keeping the turf watered throughout the summer. Field drainage has also been installed. The first layer of asphalt has been laid on the walkways, which is exciting news for joggers and walkers.

Despite two recent extreme heat waves, construction has continued without delays. “Our contractor and staff took care of themselves during the heatwave,” said BPR.

What work is there to be done before Billings Field reopens in November? Remaining renovations include fencing and railings along the ramps, stairs, and park perimeter, final court surfacing, court painting, and paver installation. “The final phase of planting is scheduled for September, once the hottest days of summer are behind us,” BPR explained.

When renovations are complete, Billings Field will feature new stairs, an accessible ramp from Bellevue Street, expanded pathways, and new trees throughout the park. Improvements also include resurfacing of the basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts, a new splash pad, upgraded athletic fields, enhanced lighting, new scoreboards, repaired retaining walls, and a new outdoor hockey rink.
